Anorectal Manometry

Overview

Anorectal Manometry is a test performed to evaluate patients with constipation, diarrhea or fecal incontinence. This test measures the pressures of the anal sphincter muscles, the sensation in the rectum, and the reflexes that are needed for normal bowel movements. You will lie on your left side. A small, latex-free, flexible tube with a balloon at the end will be inserted into your rectum. The tube is connected and measures pressures. The test will take approximately 10 minutes to complete but expect to be here for 30 minutes. This test is usually done in the clinic. No sedation is necessary.
